Hugh Sinclair

Prof. Hugh Sinclair
Co-Director. Professor of Surface Geodynamics, University of Edinburgh

Hugh Sinclair is a Professor of Surface Geodynamics in the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh. Hugh’s teaching and research is based around understanding the fundamental processes that govern sediment transport from mountains to lowland plains. Extreme events such as large floods, debris flows and landslides are critical to understanding these processes as they impact urban and rural settlements. Hugh has published extensively, with a focus on extreme events in Himalayan regions such as Ladakh, Uttarakhand and Nepal. Where results impact communities, he works with stakeholders to improve plans for resilience.  Hugh’s research team is supported through NERC, EU Horizon2020 and the UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund. He also sits on numerous international research funding panels, and is currently Deputy Head of the Global Change institute at Edinburgh University.
