A Time-limited Opportunity: Our Message to the OECD ‘Building Systemic Climate Resilience in Cities’ Workshop

Cities are particularly vulnerable to climate shocks, often with drastic social, economic, and environmental impacts resulting from single events. Yet cities also are places of opportunity in developing resilience to climate related hazards. Adopting a “systems approach” is essential to help promote cross-sectoral, multi-disciplinary collaboration in the process of urban policy making.

On the 7th July 2022, the OECD hosted a workshop on Building Systemic Climate Resilience in Cities.

The event attracted over 100 online participants, with expert presentation from expert panellists and speakers, including Hub Co-Director Prof Mark Pelling.

In his presentation, Prof Pelling’s specific contributions focussed on the time limited opportunity for reducing risk – the opportunity to reduce risk is constrained by urban growth happening now into the next 2 decades.

The OECD will use the inputs from the event in the OECD Horizontal Project on Building Climate and Economic Resilience in the Transition to a Low-Carbon Economy, including a paper to be prepared for the COP27.
