In Memoriam: Professor John McCloskey – A Legacy of Dedication to Earthquake Science

It is with deep sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Professor John McCloskey, Tomorrow’s Cities director and Professor of Natural Hazards Science at the University of Edinburgh. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and close friends.

Professor McCloskey dedicated his life to advancing earthquake science with a strong focus on mitigating the impact of this and other hazards in developing nations. His expertise resonated not only within the scientific community, where he was widely recognised, but also far beyond. In 2010, his impactful research earned him the 72nd position on the Sunday Times list of the 100 most influential scientists, particularly acknowledging his contributions during the Sumatra earthquake and tsunami crises. His commitment to seismic research was further recognized when he became a Member of the Royal Irish Academy in 2011.

John’s tireless dedication and visionary thinking were instrumental in steering Tomorrow’s Cities Hub work and in projecting the future of the project. As we mourn the loss of a distinguished scientist and leader, the Tomorrow’s Cities Hub team stands united in reaffirming our commitment to honouring Professor John McCloskey’s memory and continuing the vital work he championed.

Thank you, John.
