The Training on Tomorrow’s Cities Decision Support Environment (TCDSE): Future-Oriented, Risk-Informed, Inclusive Urban Planning was successfully conducted from 21–24 July 2026 at the National Society for Earthquake Technology–Nepal (NSET). The training was organized under the Tomorrow’s Cities Innovation Network (TCIN) project, funded by the University College London (UCL), with guidance from the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction (DUDBC) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). The event was jointly organized by NSET, UCL, and the Regional and Urban Planners’ Society of Nepal (RUPSON).

The four-day course brought together 33 participants (Urban planners, Architects, Engineers) from government agencies, province, municipalities, professional organizations, and technical institutions across Nepal. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ capacity to apply the TCDSE framework for future-oriented, risk-informed, and inclusive urban planning while promoting its institutionalization nationwide.

The course covered the four core modules of the TCDSE framework: Future Visioning, Visioning Scenario Development, Multi-Hazard Physical and Social Impact Assessment, and Risk Agreement. Through interactive lectures, practical exercises, and demonstrations of the TCDSE computational platform (Webapp), participants enhanced their skills in stakeholder engagement, policy development, land use planning, multi-hazard risk assessment, and evidence-based urban planning.

All participants successfully completed the course and highly appreciated its practical and participatory approach. They emphasized the need to institutionalize the training within national planning and capacity-building systems, align it with Nepal’s planning framework, conduct it regularly, and develop a pool of national trainers to support wider implementation.

Representatives from UCL, NSET, RUPSON, and DUDBC reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the nationwide adoption of the TCDSE framework. The training marks an important step toward strengthening Nepal’s capacity for resilient, inclusive, and risk-informed urban planning through collaboration among government, professional institutions, academia, and international partners.
